Truro Clay Works Studio Policies

Studio Hours

The studio is open during class time only.

Payment

All classes are sold as a set of 8, 3 hr classes for 400.00 If you are unable to make a class there is no reimbursement. The cost of clay, glaze and firing are billed together in the weight of the work you make. Upon completion of your work you will be charged 5 dollars a pound.

Cancellations

Truro Clay Works reserves the right to cancel any class that is under-subscribed and, in such a case, guarantees a full refund of tuition. If a customer cancels their registration, 80% of the total cost will be refunded if Truro Clay Works is notified of withdrawal 14 days prior to the start of class.  If you cancel your registration less than 14 days before the start of your class, your entire payment will be forfeited. 

Scholarships & Work Study


Scholarships may be available throughout the year and will be issued for special cases at our discretion.  Our Work-Study program allows adult students to take a workshop for up to 50% off tuition in exchange for working or cleaning at Truro Clay Works. Please email us before registering. Work-Study assignments include: assistance during events, administrative tasks, landscaping, cleaning, and other tasks as needed. 1.5 hours worked = 1 hour of workshop time. If you fail to complete the requisite work hours you must pay the remaining tuition of the workshop.


Glazes

Please be careful when moving glaze buckets. If you recklessly spill a glaze, you may be responsible for the cost of replacing it. You must mix glazes before use. If a glaze appears to be too thick or too thin, please alert your instructor or studio staff. Teachers and students are not permitted to adjust glazes by adding or removing water.

Outside Clay & Glazes

can be used only with the approval of studio managers. To be certain that the materials are safe for use in our space and kilns.

Cleaning

Clean up your work area when done working, including wheel, wheel basin, stool, the floor surrounding your wheel, your bucket, tools. Replace re-usable plastic and newspaper in the appropriate areas, do not leave it around the studio.  As much as possible, remove your work from the bat and transfer it to a ware board before leaving it to dry. When using glaze buckets, glaze table, hand building table, or any other common area after you have finished using it. Replace all tools, glazes, oxides, banding wheels, etc. after you are finished using them. Wedge all clay and return it to the appropriate bucket before leaving the studio. Clean and wipe down the wedging table after use. DO NOT Leave any clay on the wedging tables.

Dust & Sanding 

Do not scrape or sanding in the studio to prevent hazardous dust. Wet sanding is encouraged. Do not sweeping  in order to prevent clay dust; use a wet sponge for cleaning instead.

Equipment Training

If you have not been trained to use a piece of equipment, DO NOT USE IT. Ask staff for training on how to use the equipment. If you break equipment because you used it without prior instruction, you will be liable for any damage caused.

Personal Property

Do not use others’ tools without direct permission. Avoid touching items on shelves that aren’t yours.

Personal Items & Jewels

Please store your coats and personal items in the coat rack. Avoid leaving valuables like rings in apron pockets or at the studio. We are not liable for lost or stolen items, so please keep track of your belongings. Your vigilance can prevent loss.

Pick up Policy

All glaze work will be kept on the pick-up shelf after being unloaded for two weeks. Work remaining on the pick-up shelf two months after being placed there will be donated or tossed. Work left in the hospital for more than two months will also be donated or tossed. Student bisque or glaze work left at the studio two weeks into the next semester will also be donated or tossed.

Consideration of Others

Please be considerate of those around you by taking up only as much space as you need to work. Please be considerate of those around you by not talking too loudly, not talking to people wearing headphones, and generally by respecting the library-esque atmosphere of the studio. Please be aware of offering unsolicited advice. If someone needs help, they will ask. If you’d like to offer help, please ask first and listen if they say, “No, thank you.” Remember, people don’t always want help even if you think it might be useful. If you have a question about how to do something or how to use equipment, please ask staff, do not interrupt another member or student.

Treat Everyone with Respect

 Do not discriminate. Follow the sexual harassment policy (do not sexually harass anyone at the studio).

No Smoking

Our studio is in a no-smoking building, please step outside for smoke breaks
